↓01 / RESTORING DEGRADED LANDSCAPES
How can damaged land recover?
Restoration asks how land that has lost its ecological function can recover. My work examines what changes in the soil and vegetation as different restoration approaches are applied.
Why this matters
Understanding those changes helps us assess restoration beyond how green a site looks. Soil properties, microbial activity, and plant communities offer different parts of the picture.
How I study it
Long-term studies of degraded sodic lands, comparisons of land-use systems, and physical, chemical, microbial, and enzyme indicators of soil health.
02 / BIODIVERSITY & PLANT COMMUNITIES
What can a diverse plant community do?
How native plants assemble can affect their resistance to invasion. My current research examines seed density, arrival order, species identity, diversity, and functional traits, alongside earlier work on perennial grass communities.
Why this matters
A productive landscape can be assessed for more than a single crop yield. Biodiversity, soil recovery, and potential uses of plant material belong in the same conversation.
How I study it
Field and greenhouse experiments, native seed-mixture design, and tests of species interactions, priority effects, functional traits, and soil processes.
03 / BIOENERGY & THE BIOECONOMY
Can biomass production work with restoration?
Bioenergy research looks at plant material as a resource. My work considers perennial cropping systems and bioenergy crops on marginal land, alongside ecological and practical constraints.
Why this matters
A promising crop still needs to perform under real conditions. Field experiments help test assumptions about yield, soil effects, and suitable growing conditions.
How I study it
Multi-site Jatropha experiments, screening of crop accessions, and work on perennial-grass systems. The Jatropha work reported yields below the expectations that had accompanied its promotion.
